Support Dyslexia with Assistive Technology

Support Dyslexia with Assistive Technology

As a parent, there’s nothing more heartbreaking than watching your child struggle, especially when they’re trying their hardest and still feeling frustrated.

Dyslexia is often misunderstood, but it’s so much more than just difficulty reading or writing. It’s a complex, language-based learning disability that can affect not just spelling and reading, but time management, memory, sequencing, and even orientation.

At Assistive Tech, we hear firsthand from parents who feel helpless, as they watch their kids battle to make sense of a world that often feels impossible to understand.  Like any mum and dad all we want is for our children to thrive, be happy and feel confident, right?

The good news is, there is a tried and tested solution that can help. The assistive reading pen called the C-Pen. It is an innovative piece of assistive technology that helps individuals with reading difficulties, such as those with dyslexia.

How does it work?

The user places the C-Pen’s scanning head over a word or sentence in a book, paper, or other printed material. The device uses OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology to scan the text. The pen processes the scanned text and converts it into digital form. The C-Pen then reads the text aloud, either through an internal speaker or connected headphones, helping the user understand the content by hearing it.

Many of our models of C-Pens come with a built-in dictionary, so if the user encounters a difficult word, the device can also provide definitions and translations.

The perfect scanning pen for School

One of our popular reading aids is the C-Pen Exam Reader. It’s a remarkable device that reads any printed text aloud through its built-in speaker, or it can connect to headphones for a more private experience. Whether it's reading an entire paragraph or just a single word, the Exam Reader helps students access content more effectively. It is approved for use in exams, meaning no special arrangements or separate testing rooms are necessary. The pen is discreet, fitting comfortably in a pocket, and allows students to use their preferred headphones without drawing attention. Currently, the Exam Reader supports multiple languages, including English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
Students with dyslexia often require additional time to read, take notes, or write legibly. Assistive technology like the C-Pen helps make learning more accessible, allowing students to fully demonstrate their understanding of concepts without being hindered by their difficulties.
