Changes to NDIS Rules for Augmented Communication Apps and iPads: What You Need to Know

On October 3, 2024, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) introduced some important changes to the way participants can access funding for augmented communication apps and iPads. These changes aim to make the process clearer and ensure participants can access the tools they need to communicate effectively.

What Are Augmented Communication Apps?

Augmented communication apps are tools designed to help people with disabilities communicate. These apps often run on iPads or similar devices and are vital for individuals who have difficulty speaking or need additional support to express themselves. Access to these tools can greatly improve the quality of life for NDIS participants.

What’s Changing?

The key change is related to the approval process for purchasing these items. If you need a new device or app, there are now two ways to demonstrate you have approval for purchase of these items:

  1. A Replacement Supports Approval Letter from the NDIS
This letter confirms that the NDIS has approved the purchased of your device and/or app. It acts as a formal document that you can present to providers or your plan manager to confirm you have approval from the NDIS for your purchase.

  2. Incorporation of the Item in Your NDIS Plan
If your NDIS plan includes the device or app as a stated support, you can use the PDF copy of your plan as evidence. A stated support means that the NDIS has specifically listed the item as something they will fund for you.

Why Are These Changes Important?

Previously, the process for purchasing augmented communication devices and apps could be unclear, leading to delays or confusion. With these new rules, the NDIS has streamlined the process, making it easier for participants to purchase these items without unnecessary hurdles.

What Should You Do?

If you rely on augmented communication tools, here’s what you need to do to ensure you can access replacements smoothly:

  1. Check Your NDIS Plan
Look at the PDF copy of your NDIS plan to see if your device or app is listed as a stated support. If it is, you can use this document as evidence when requesting a replacement.

  2. Request a Replacement Supports Approval Letter
If the item is not listed in your plan, you can contact the NDIS to request a Replacement Supports Approval. Make sure to explain why you need the replacement and how it supports your goals in your plan. We recommend creating a draft agreement that outlines the costs and products with Assistive Tech via our NDIS Ordering Tool to submit with your application.

  3. Work with Your Support Coordinator
If you’re unsure about the process, your support coordinator or local area coordinator (LAC) can help. They can guide you through the steps and ensure you have the right evidence.

Final Thoughts

The introduction of these changes is a positive step toward making the NDIS more user-friendly and accessible. By clarifying the evidence required for purchasing these mainstream devices and apps, participants can now feel more confident about getting the tools they need.

If you’re an NDIS participant who uses augmented communication tools, take the time to review your plan and understand these changes. Doing so will help ensure you continue to have access to the supports that make a difference in your daily life.
